 Objectives
For a young researcher getting started on a PhD project presents quite a challenge. In order to be successful the PhD student has to acquire a scientific attitude and learn to operate beyond the limits of established knowledge. The workshop aims at providing tools and insight for PhD students which is designed to help them get started successfully on their own research projects. The participants learn how to brainstorm, operationalise research questions, plan projects and find ways of increasing self knowledge and producing assertive communication in order to improve their own research proposals.

Contents
The workshop focuses on the following three themes:
  • the research question as the basis of the project;
  • interaction with the PhD supervisor and understanding one’s own preferred style of working;
  • managing and planning a research project.

Methods
The workshops use the following formats:

  • short introductions to the themes followed by group discussions;
  • exercises and the sharing of experience;
  • take-home assignments;
  • on-line discussion and networking.

Output
Taking part in the workshop will provide the participants with:

  • a detailed analysis of their research assignment;
  • a review (re-writing) of their research proposal;
  • a network of researchers in a similar situation.

Participants
The workshop is open to PhD students in the first year of their research project. The minimum number of participants is eight, the maximum per group is fourteen.

Investment in terms of time and money
The course consists of four sessions in the morning and an online follow up period of one month. The total study time (including preparation for the meetings, home assignments and on-line activities) amounts to 40 hours. The fee for the course is € 570 (course materials included).
A TU-purchasing order should be in our possession 14 days before the start of the course.
