TRAINING AND ADMITTANCE
A close
interrelation between training and research is an essential feature
of any research school. Accordingly the Research School Integral
Design of Structures trains doctoral students to the level of
independent researcher. During the four-year research project
leading to a PhD. degree, the candidate follows a training programme.
For the
compulsory training programme each candidate has to produce an
education plan in consultation with the supervising professor (promotor).
This plan is tailor-made for the individual needs of the project in
question. The training programme is designed to produce professional
researchers, to deepen and support knowledge on the research topic,
but it also helps the candidate to reflect on his or her own work
within a broader social context.
The programme is
open to graduates from any of the building and civil engineering
faculties and business administration in the technical sector.
However, for subjects in the fields of materials science and
building physics graduated chemists and physicists qualify as well.
Also projects are possible that require a degree in mathematics or
informatics. A large proportion of the doctoral research topics are selected in consultation with industry and other research institutes. An important source of subjects constitute programmes in civil and structural engineering from research coordinating and programming bodies such as NWO, EU, ICES/KIS. Also the advise of national councils, such as the Advisory Council for Science and Technology Policy (Adviesraad voor Wetenschap en Technologiebeleid, AWT) and the Advisory Counsel for Technology Policy for the Building Industry (Adviesraad voor Technologiebeleid voor de Bouw, ARTB), is ponderous.
